RAF Museum - A FREE, FUN, FANTASTIC DAY OUT FOR EVERYONE
Website RAF Museum
Details This year, wing your way over to the Royal Air Force Museum for a free, fun day out.

The Royal Air Force Museum is Britain’s only national Museum dedicated wholly to aviation.  With a world-class collection and display of aircraft, integrated with special exhibitions, films, interactives, artwork, engines, missiles, photographs, uniforms, medals and research and education facilities, the Museum takes an innovative approach while keeping with tradition.

While offering a detailed insight into aviation technology, it also focuses on the people who made it possible – from daredevil early aviators, through wartime heroes, to the thousands of ordinary Service men and women whose contribution shapes the world we live in today.

The Museum occupies two public sites at London, and Cosford, Shropshire. Each site offers a unique experience to the visitor and the exhibits compliment each other in terms of the history they project. Both Museums tell the story of aviation from the early bi-planes to the new strike-jets.

The London site is situated on what used to be RAF Hendon. It holds over 100 aircraft in 5 aircraft themed aircraft hall. Other exhibits include missiles, paintings, film shows, medals and uniforms. Be sure to see the Milestones of Flight gallery, with its suspended aircraft, interactive plinths and time-line wall.

The Royal Air Force Museum Cosford, is acknowledged as one of the top public attractions in the Midlands. The Visitor Centre, which includes a restaurant and souvenir shop, is a perfect take-off point for a tour of the Museum, including the wartime hangars in which many of the aircraft are housed - a number of them the only remaining examples in the world.

The magnificent National Cold War Exhibition, a stunning new hall focusing on the Cold War story from national, international and social/political as well as cultural perspectives.  This permanent exhibition hall tells the exciting story of the Cold War years with exhibits including suspended aircraft, military tanks, interactives, films, and more. Learn about what life was like behind the iron curtain!

We also hold exciting events at both sites. This year events include Veterans day, D-Day celebrations, Battle of Britain weekend and a Roald Dahl birthday weekend. For more details you can click on to www.rafmuseum.org or call one of the numbers below and speak to a member of staff who will be glad to help you. So book a day out to remember at one of the Royal Air Force Museum sites.

Bletchley Park Museum - the Enigma machine and code breakers of WWII
Website Bletchley Park Museum
Details Seeing one of our Enigma Machines, including the rare 'Abwehr G312', is undoubtedly a highlight of a busy day out at Bletchley Park, but there is much more than machines in a visit to the historic site. Check out the tales of spies and strategic deception. You may even be the one to discover the map to genius mathematician Alan Turing's silver, supposedly buried in or near Bletchley Park.
There are more than enough different activities and exhibitions to occupy most families for a whole day, from wartime toys to working computers. There's a wartime mini cinema and an outstanding Churchill collection. Lively exciting events are held on special days throughout the year. Have a look through the ornate Victorian Mansion that was headquarters to intelligence staff during the War. Wander by the Lake, relax and observe the wildlife. Children can let off steam on our new playground. And there's much much more..

Imperial War Museum Duxford
Website Duxford
Details
In February 1940 one of the heroes of the Second World War was posted to No.19 Squadron at Duxford. Flying Officer Douglas Bader had lost his legs in an air crash several years earlier and had been discharged from the RAF. Determined to serve his country in the way he knew best, he badgered the RAF until he was allowed to fly again. He would not permit his artificial limbs to deter him and soon showed himself to be a courageous pilot and a fine leader.
By June 1940 Belgium, Holland and France had fallen to the German forces and the conquest of Britain was their next objective. Duxford was placed in a high state of readiness and to create space for additional units at Duxford, 19 Squadron moved to nearby Fowlmere. Then came the start of Hitler's attempt to dominate the skies over Britain as a prelude to the subjugation of Britain.

The period of intense air fighting that followed has become known as the Battle of Britain. Duxford's first Hurricanes arrived in July with the formation of No.310 Squadron, made up of Czechoslovakian pilots who had escaped from France. At the end of August the Air Officer Commanding 12 Group, Air-Vice Marshal Trafford Leigh-Mallory, ordered the Hurricanes of 242 Squadron, now commanded by Douglas Bader, down from Coltishall to join 19 and 310 Squadrons on daily standby at Duxford. Leigh-Mallory was impressed with the performance of 19 and 310 Squadrons and authorised Bader to lead 242, 19 and 310 operating together as a Wing. On 9 September the Duxford squadrons successfully intercepted and turned back a large force of German bombers before they reached their target. On the strength of this two more squadrons were added to the Wing, No.302 (Polish) Squadron with Hurricanes, and the Spitfires of No.611 Auxiliary Squadron which had mobilised at Duxford a year before.
Every day some sixty Spitfires and Hurricanes were dispersed around Duxford and Fowlmere. Bader's 'Big Wing', now known more formally as 12 Group Wing, was ready for action by 15 September 1940, which became known as 'Battle of Britain Day'. On this historic day they twice took to the air to repulse Luftwaffe attacks aimed at London. RAF fighter Command was successful, the threat of invasion passed and Duxford's squadrons had played a vital role in the victory.

Historical Footsteps Tours - Phillip Lewis
Website
Historical Footsteps Tours
Details We are a small company based in North West Kent that specialises in tours based around historical figures, incidents and events. We believe that history is best explored by retracing events in the locations where they actually took place.
The majority of Historical Footsteps Tours are centred around London and southern England and range in duration from 2 hours to a full day. We believe that clients deserve as much of our personal attention as possible and, therefore, restrict our group sizes for walking tours to 10 people and the full day tours to 23 people. The majority of our tours are devoted to areas of historical interest that are covered by few if any other tour operators. Some of our tours such as the Jack the Ripper walking tour cover a greater number of sites than many other operators.
Most tours will operate all year round. Please keep watching our website for details of our new tours as they are developed and become operational.

Jack the Ripper Walking Tour
During the late summer and autumn of 1888 a series of horrific murders took place in the East End of London that became known as the Whitechapel Murders.  The murderer, who was given the title of Jack the Ripper was never apprehended.  Relive this 'Autumn of Terror' with an Historical Footsteps walking tour through the streets of Whitechapel and Spitalfields.

The London Blitz Walk
In 1940, London and many other cities in Britain suffered a period of sustained air raids that tested the determination and courage of the civilian population of this country. Although most of the physical damage to buildings has been repaired it is still possible to see evidence of that period in our history. Why not join one of our Historical Footsteps Tours for a two and a half hour guided walk through some of the areas affected by the Blitz.  Tour group numbers are limited to a maximum of 10 people. Tours start at Bank Underground Station.

The Kray Twins Tour
In the East End of London in 1933 twin boys were born. Their names would become well known throughout London and the rest of Britain as notorious gangsters in the second half of the 20th century.
Ronnie and Reggie Kray spent much of their childhood and teenage years in Whitechapel and Bethnal Green. They achieved their first taste of fame as boxers but they are more famous for their gangland activities and crimes that included the murders of George Cornell and Jack 'the Hat' McVitie.

The Invasion Of Britain 1940
In development

The Battle Of Britain Tour
Anyone looking out to sea from Dover in 1940 could clearly view the colossal German armaments along the French coast 25 miles away and witness overhead the daily troublesome Luftwaffe flights probing Britain's defences. Nobody doubted that it would be long before the Germans tried to invade Britain and it was obvious that, as a preliminary to such an invasion, Britain's air defences would need to be destroyed and its Royal Air Force (R.A.F.) rendered inoperative...

Hollywood Glamour, Vogue, Musician, Burlesque, Film Noir, Vintage, World War II, Travel in the 30s and 40s, English Country House

Gordon Ayres has been photographing the British and Continental 1930s, 40s, 50s retro scene for over 20 years, following the people who have created a unique look and sound - from the bands and dancers, to the fans who populate this stylish, secretive underworld movement.

Using techniques culled from the classic Hollywood period, Ayres finds inspiration in both the studio glamour photographers of the time, and the grainy reportage style of the dime newspaper reporters.

Film Noir is an inspiration for scene set shots, and similar lighting suits the exotic allure of Burlesque ,and smoky night-club musician photographs.

By contrast the elegance of Vogue-magazine-style portraits of ladies with hats and gloves at a Paris cafe, or snaps of people in evening clothes at a Swiss hotel in the thirties-give an impression of a bygone era.

Use of quality vintage lens and studio lamps create the exact feel of the look of the 20s to the 50s- for whatever the occasion.

FlyingJacket.com - There's only one Irvin RAF Sheepskin Flying Jacket!
Website FlyingJacket.com
Details There's only one Irvin RAF Sheepskin Flying Jacket!

And we're the only people in the world making the real thing.

I'm a qualified and keen pilot and in 1977 I decided I wanted a real flying jacket. You know, a proper one. One like those you saw in the films and in the faded photographs of our heroic WWII pilots. I discovered that the jacket I sought, the one that small boys dream of as they leap from the top of the wardrobe (a wardrobe which was of course doubling as a Spitfire), was the Irvin RAF Sheepskin Flying Jacket.

So, I did my research and made one (you can read more about that in The Irvin story). I loved it. It was warm, comfortable, ideal for flying and I must admit; wearing it felt rather good. Other people liked my jacket too and it wasn't long before we were asked to make some more. We began to accept orders and Aviation Leathercraft was born.

It seemed to work out well. Supplies of war issue flying jackets were diminishing, yet demand for the jackets was high. We became very busy and our craftsmen did a grand job in meeting the demand for high-quality hand-made jackets. Then as now our jackets were popular with pilots, motoring enthusiasts, bikers and people who just wanted a great jacket for everyday use.

We're part of Moto-Lita, makers of the finest hand-made British steering wheels.

Naomi Payne - Jazz, Blues, Classics
Website Naomi Payne
Details Naomi’s musical talent and extraordinary voice were first recognised when she was just a young teenager. This was hardly surprising given the way in which her parents had immersed her in the music of Bessie Smith, Leadbelly, Robert Johnson and other blues Greats and it was only natural that she should move onto listening to such jazz Divas as Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald.

Naomi’s desire to entertain led her to sing with a number of different bands on the jazz and blues circuit in her early twenties, and she was chosen to sing live on BBC Radio Shropshire in 1996.

Despite taking a short break to marry and have children Naomi inevitably returned to her singing career three years ago and immediately found herself in great demand at a variety of society functions, including weddings, fashion shows, vintage themed dances/parties (playing popular music from the 1900s - 1940s) and the 2009 and 2010 Ludlow Food Festival.

Currently Naomi provides a stunning front for a sixteen piece show band as well as mesmerising the audience with her more intimate Naomi Payne Quartet which plays jazz, blues, classic and Latin numbers. Together these two allow her to give full range to her magnificent voice, equally comfortable delivering the husky blues classics as the show stopping Broadway hits.
