Sandie Shaw Q/A May 2010

Sandie Shaw
Sandie Shaw,
the singer famously 'discovered' by Adam Faith, who went on to
become a barefoot fixture in the sixties' charts with hits like
Always Something There to Remind Me, Girl Don't Come, Long Live
Love, Message Understood and Monsieur Dupont. And, of course, that
famous Eurovision winner Puppet On A String :-)
Morrissey
and The Smiths invited their heroine Sandie to work with them in the
eighties and Sandie had a religious reincarnation as a Buddhist and
a career change qualifying as a psychotherapist. She also gained
ownership of her complete back-catalogue of songs in a rare such win
against the music giants.
These
days, Sandie runs a stress clinic for people in the entertainment
world, supports a large and exhaustive website for her fans and
chooses various diverse projects that interest her from time to
time.

Sandie with Mum and Dad
Digger:
Can you tell us about your involvement with this movie to do with
the Ford female workers strike?
Sandie: It is released in October and is called 'Made In Dagenham'. It will
make you laugh your socks off and cry rivers. I found it really
emotional. It is produced by an old friend Stephen Wooley, an ex-partner of my ex-husband
Nik Powell. The song is aspirational and a pleasure to sing.
Digger: What do you consider your biggest achievements to date and
what do you still want to accomplish?
Sandie: My five children. I want to continue to design beautiful
environments to share with people and show them how beautiful
our world is and to do some Grand Design architectural work. And to work towards the enrichment
of British and European popular culture. Oh, and I want to live
and die in Buddhahood. I would also like to make better apple crumbles.

Sandie and
Adam Faith

Digger: Incredibly, I was seven when you first hit the charts and
you were only seventeen! What are your fondest memories of those days and are you nostalgic for that time or do you tend to
look forward?
Sandie: I'm not nostalgic. Appreciative, but I find the future really
intriguing.
Digger: Please describe the following people in a few words each...
Sandie: (Adam Faith) - Just missed becoming a Buddhist before he died. Will be
eternally grateful for his belief in me and his entrepreneurial
spirit.
(Chris Andrews, songwriter) - My dream big bro'
(Eve Taylor, manager) - What a gal!
(Morrissey) - An exceptional man, exceptional times and an exceptional
opportunity for me.

Burt
Bacharach and Chris Andrews

Eve Taylor
with Adam Faith

Morrissey
Digger: Like you, I hate Eurovision with a vengeance.
Why do you think Britain continues to 'compete' when we know that there is partisan voting and that songs are not chosen on merit,
especially given Britain's unique and outstanding track record in
the popular music field. Isn't it rather pathetic that a nation who
produced The Beatles, The Stones, David Bowie, Queen, Pink Floyd,
The Kinks, The Who, Dusty Springfield, Sandie Shaw and so on can't beat third-rate
musical nations in a so-called Song Contest?
Sandie: Dont hate it.
It is just light entertainment. It would be great if it were
given the opportunity to clean its act up - a bit like British
politics....
Digger: How have things changed for women compared to the sixties
when you were a factory worker and then a youngster caught up in the
male-dominated music business?
Sandie: I cannot recall ever being knowingly dominated by a
man...
Digger: Are there any myths about you (or Wikipedia inaccuracies)
that you'd like to dispel?
Sandie: Not really. I like people to make up their own myths.
Digger: What does The Internet mean to you and your life?
Sandie: A lot of bloody work that I would rather not do.
Digger: When you had your feet 'done' were you at all tempted to
have anything higher done at the same time?!
Sandie: No. I am perfect from the ankles up.
Digger: What is the biggest compliment you have received about your music/performances?
Sandie: So many, more, more, more.

Digger: What was Burt Bacharach's relationship with Dusty, Cilla and
yourself given that he wrote big hits for all of you?
Sandie: I can't speak for Dusty and Cilla. Eve Taylor managed to put
paid to any dream relationship that dear old Burt could have fantasized
with me.... I really admire his co-writer Hal David. He is a lovely talented man
completely devoid of ego.
Digger: What makes you laugh? What makes you sad? What makes you
angry? What makes you hopeful?
Sandie: Human beings.
Digger: Who are your favourite songwriters and performers of all
time?
Sandie: Ohhh so many. What a great gift to share.
Digger: What projects do you have lined-up for the future?
Sandie: Goodwood and then I will think again.

with the express intention of reproducing posters,
programmes and T shirts etc. from the festivals
organised between 1969-1979, by her father, promoter
Freddy Bannister. The aim is to offer exact replicas
of the originals, reproduced to the highest

The posters are printed in limited editions and
signed and numbered by the promoter as proof of
